About

Professor Kwasi Preko is a Professor of Geophysics at the Department of Physics, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. He had his BSc. Geology with Physics (1986) in University of Ghana, Legon, MPhil. in Geophysics with Geology, Mineralogy and Experimental and Environmental Physics (1997) and Dr. rer. nat. (2008) degrees at the University of Karlsruhe (now KIT), Germany. As part of his doctoral research he worked on the use of the Ground penetrating radar to retrieve continuous soil water data for climatic applications. Hitherto, most popular soil water information used had been discrete.Prof. Kwasi Preko has over 20 years been lecturing in the Department of Physics (Geophysics, Meteorology and Climate Science Units) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. He has supervised over 100 undergraduate students at the undergraduate level in B.Sc. Physics, Geophysics and Climate Science and Meteorology as well as 50 postgraduate research projects at the MSc/MPhil level in Geophysics and Meteorology and Climate Science, co-supervised 8 PhD students and supervised 10 PhD students in Geophysics and Meteorology and Climate Science. He has over 50 publications in peer-refereed journals to his credit.Prof. Preko is the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Physical and Computational Sciences of the College of Science, KNUST (2018-2020). He has been Vice-Dean of the same Faculty and Head of Department, Department of Physics (2017 - 2018), and Board Chairman, Photocopy Unit, KNUST, Kumasi (2017 to 2020). He has served as Chairman, College of Science Tender Evaluation Sub-Committee of KNUST, Kumasi since 2014, and currently he is the Chairman of the Junior Science and Maths Quiz programme. He has served as a Subject Area Editor of the Journal of Ghana Science Association (JGSA) (2018-2020), a reviewer of the Journal of Science and Technology, (JUST) and other international Journals including of Journal of Geoscience and Environmental Protection (GEP), Irvine, CA, Journal of Geophysics and Engineering, Institute of Physics, England, and Sensors Journal, Switzerland. He loves the Lord and besides his teaching and research duties serves as a counsellor and mentor to students and his colleagues alike. While still a postgraduate student in Germany, he together with a bosom friend of his, (Dr. Anthony Agyei Agyemang, presently of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering, KNUST) founded the Church “All Christians Believers Fellowship” and through effective teachings won a number of Christians, both of European and African descent to the Lord. More information about this group can be seen in the book “From Migrants to Missionaries, Christians of African origin in Germany” by Benjamin Simon. Presently, he is a presiding Elder in The Church of Pentecost, Ejisu, Ashanti Region, Ghana.

Research Summary

(inferred from publications by AI)

The researcher's work focuses on comprehensive studies across hydrological processes, atmospheric phenomena, water resources management, geophysical methods, and environmental contamination in agricultural contexts. Their research encompasses the variability of rainfall patterns, their impact on catchment systems, the influence of heavy metals on soil health, the role of solar radiation in groundwater replenishment, potential gold deposits identified through geophysical techniques, and the effects of climate change on soil quality. Advanced technologies such as satellite remote sensing, geophysical surveys, and electromagnetic methods are employed to analyze hydrological processes, contamination, and water resources. The research also explores applications of these methods in optimizing agricultural practices and mitigating environmental risks.
